BEST LOW SUGAR FRUITS FOR HEALTHY SMOOTHIES
I often get asked how smoothies can be healthy if they are packed with fruit. That is a valid question and even though I love the occasional sweet laden smoothie, I do limit the amount of sugary fruits that I add to my smoothies.
Here are the fruits with the lowest sugar content…
Now, not all these low sugar fruits could be “hero” standalone ingredient in a smoothie. The main exception is the mighty tomato. You can check out my favorite tomato smoothie recipe here. It is recipe number 3.
Berries are superfoods. They are rich in antioxidants and low in sugar. Berries are my “go to fruit” for many of my smoothies. All berries have a relatively low sugar count, but raspberries has to be my favorite.
Lemon and lime are both perfect for flavoring a smoothie. Not only is it refreshing, but it tends to balance the taste of smoothies. So, whenever the taste of a smoothie is a bit unbalanced or just not right, I add lemon or lime. 🙂
And then there is rhubarb… I am not sure why, but it is not a fruit I have tried in a smoothie yet. Maybe it is because of the taste. I will be looking for rhubarb recipes and once I find a nice one I will share it here.
Do you use these low sugar fruits in your smoothies? Which are your favorites and how do you prefer to use them? Oh and if you have a favorite rhubarb , please share it with us.
